Driving Miss Daisy is Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about the growing respect and friendship between an elderly Jewish widow and her African American chauffeur. This heartwarming story is set in Atlanta and spans twenty-five years, 1948 to 1973. When Daisy Wertham, a stubborn, elderly Southern widow, crashes her new car into the neighbor’s garage, her son, Boolie, forces her to take on a chauffeur. He employs Hoke Coleburn, much to her chagrin. At first, Daisy refuses to rely on a black man to get her from one place to the next and Hoke spends two weeks sitting in the kitchen doing nothing. Gradually, however, Daisy’s prejudices are broken down and, against all odds, he becomes her best friend. Daisy teaches Hoke to read and write, while Hoke encourages Daisy to let go of her insecurities. Uhry’s delicate drama explores the experience of aging while the world around you moves forwards at great pace.

Friday, Aug. 19, 7-9 pm, Saturday, Aug. 20 3-5 pm

Six Characters centers on six characters who interrupt a play rehearsal to ask the Producer to complete their story, claiming their author never finished the play for which he created them. While the Producer and actors are incredulous at first, they become fascinated by the characters’ plight and are drawn into their crisis. Conflict emerges between reality and appearance as the characters and the stage company struggle to resolve the uncertainties that trouble not just the characters’ existence, but identity itself.
